About Our Safety Partnerships

At Toys"R"Us, Inc., children are central to who we are and what we do, and part of our mission as a company is to keep children safe. To fulfill this mission, we have established partnerships with leading organizations throughout the country.

In August 2009, Toys"R"Us, Inc. established a partnership with the Home Safety Council, the only national nonprofit organization solely dedicated to preventing home-related injuries that result in nearly 20,000 deaths and 21 million medical visits on average each year. Through award-winning national programs, partnerships and the support of volunteers, the Home Safety Council educates people of all ages to be safer in and around their homes, providing information on fire safety and poison and accident prevention, among other topics.

The Home Safety Council educates and empowers families by:
  • Raising awareness of the proper use and placement of lifesaving safety devices in the home;
  • Providing educators and local safety partners with easy-to-understand materials on fire and life safety that they can pass on to students and families in their communities;
  • Making available dedicated educational websites to educate kids and adults about potential hazards in the home and how to address them;
  • Supporting policy initiatives and legislation that aim to create safe homes across the country; and
  • Spearheading research to help society understand consumer knowledge, attitudes and behaviors regarding home safety practices.
Toys"R"Us, Inc. and the Home Safety Council work together to provide tools and resources for parents and caregivers to raise awareness about the importance and urgency of creating a safe home environment for children. This partnership pairs safety expertise with baby product knowledge and is designed to encourage parents to make baby-proofing their homes an important part of planning for a new baby.

A study conducted by the Home Safety Council found that 95% of parents took measures to baby-proof their homes, but an alarming 50% waited until their child was already crawling, putting these little ones at risk to dangers around the house. As part of the partnership, the two organizations have developed important safety tips that serve as a room-by-room guide to keeping little ones safe in the home. The tips provide parents with an easy-to-reference checklist when preparing their home for baby’s arrival, and are available here, on our dedicated Safety website, Toysrus.com/Safety, and in a complimentary brochure at Babies"R"Us stores nationwide.

Founded in 1987, Safe Kids Worldwide is a global network of organizations whose mission is to prevent accidental childhood injury, a leading killer of children ages 14 and under. More than 450 coalitions in 16 countries bring together health and safety experts, educators, corporations, foundations, governments and volunteers to educate and protect families.

Safe Kids combines several factors to create programs that reduce injuries including:
  • Empowering local communities to prevent accidental injuries by building grassroots coalitions;
  • Raising awareness of the burden of accidental injuries;
  • Encouraging research on leading injury risks and critically evaluating solutions;
  • Passing and improving child safety laws and regulations;
  • Providing lifesaving devices such as child safety seats, helmets and smoke alarms to families who need them; and
  • Promoting global corporate leadership in child safety through effective and sustainable partnerships.
In 2008, Toys“R”Us, Inc. launched a national safety awareness partnership with Safe Kids Worldwide, the first organization dedicated solely to preventing unintentional childhood injury and the only one to have a global reach, with partners in 16 countries. More children ages 1 to 14 die from accidents than any other cause, and almost all of these injuries are preventable. As a company devoted to all kids, Toys“R”Us Inc., shares in the mission of Safe Kids Worldwide to protect children and keep them safe from harm. The two organizations work together to provide safety tips to parents and caregivers on keeping baby safe on-the-go.
